MDA canopies are made from highly reliable and proven materials. The rear doors and windows of the canopy are equipped with tempered glass, which is both stronger and safer than ordinary glass windows. However, tempered glass is not immune to damage or breakage for various reasons.
An important safety feature of tempered glass is that when broken, it breaks into small pieces, which helps prevent the possibility of injury caused by shards of glass. This shattering effect can occur immediately after a sufficiently strong force or vice versa. Or it can happen much later, called delayed rupture.
Owners of pickup canopies often attribute this type of breakage to a faulty glass door. But in reality, this “natural” rupture is slow due to previous impacts. Possible causes of slow breakage include:
- Impact caused by items stored inside the trunk.
- Damage to the exterior surface due to stone chips caused by rocks from the vehicle’s rear wheel bouncing and striking the rear glass.
- Driving with the rear doors or windows open causes excessive vibration or the glass hits the trunk.
- Damage caused by objects hitting the glass or large scratches.
Delayed glass breakage can be caused by:
- Ambient temperature variation, from hot to cold or vice versa.
- Loosely mounted clamps and hinges cause excessive vibration or movement that puts pressure on the rear door.
- Drive over speed bumps or through bad roads without slowing down.
To reduce the risk of glass breakage, we recommend that you perform the following checks regularly:
- Tighten all screws, window hinges, back doors, and locks regularly.
- Lubricate window hinges and locking mechanisms with good-quality greases.
- Check the glass regularly to detect any cracks or scratches in time.
- Clean the hydraulic strut with a damp cloth.
- Clean your canopy with a clean sponge or soft cloth with car cleaner. Do not use highly corrosive tools or detergents.
Use the tips above and do your best to avoid impact situations that may lead to instantaneous or delayed glass breakage. The tempered glass doors of your crate lid will last long while retaining their durability and functionality.
